Table Football: free online foosball
Table football from the café, now on your phone: rods, little players and a ball that never sits still. Against the computer at three levels, with a friend on the same device, or in the daily challenge. Free, no account needed.
How to play
- Your team is red and attacks upwards (to the left on a wide screen). Each team has four rods in the classic line-up: goalkeeper, two defenders, five midfielders and three forwards.
- Drag your finger to slide your players from side to side. Tap or lift your finger to spin the rod and shoot. On a computer, move the mouse and click, or use the arrow keys and space.
- With automatic control you move only the rod nearest the ball, which is highlighted; the others slowly follow the ball. You can also control every rod at once.
- First to 5 goals (Quick) or 10 (Classic) wins. After each goal the ball goes back to the middle, and a ball stuck where nobody can reach it is also put back. With two players, each uses their own half of the screen: whoever is at the top controls the blue team.
Where this game comes from
Table football took shape in the early decades of the 20th century. In England, Harold Searles Thornton was granted a patent in 1923, and in Spain the Galician Alejandro Finisterre registered his in 1937, in Barcelona. Other versions appeared in other countries around the same time, and who came first is still debated.
In Portugal, matraquilhos is an institution: there is a table in many cafés, local clubs and student unions, and generations learned to spin the rods there. Every country has its own name for it: foosball in the United States, futbolín in Spain, babyfoot in France.
