Flags & Capitals: free online geography quiz

Know the flag? Know the capital? Every country in the world, by continent, with a daily challenge that is the same for everyone and a no-mistakes mode to see how far you get. Free, no account needed.

How to play

  • Each question has four answers and only one is right. It can be a flag to recognise, a country whose capital you need to know, or a country whose flag you need to pick.
  • Each right answer is worth 100 points, plus up to 50 for speed and a bonus for several in a row.
  • The Daily challenge has 10 questions, the same for everyone. In No mistakes, the game goes on until your first wrong answer.
  • Some countries have more than one capital, or the government sits in another city. In those cases the game shows a note after you answer. Countries whose capital is disputed or being moved, and city-states, are left out of the capital questions.

A little history

Flags began as signals in war and at sea, so people could tell from afar who was coming. The oldest national flag still in use without major changes is Denmark’s, the Dannebrog, dating back to the 13th century.

Many capitals were chosen or purpose-built to unite their country, such as Brasília, Canberra, Abuja and Astana. There are 193 member states of the United Nations today; this game includes all of them, plus the Vatican.
