Vel’s Adventure: free online platform game

Run, jump and stomp with Vel, the Velmoxia fox, across twelve levels in four worlds: a cork oak wood, a beach with a lighthouse, a frozen ridge and a castle in the clouds. Acorns that make you stronger, fireflies that light the way, secret rooms, a boss at the end of each world and a new level every day. Free, no account needed.

How to play

  • On a phone, use the big ← and → buttons at the bottom left to walk and the Jump button at the bottom right. The longer you hold jump, the higher Vel goes. Keep walking the same way and Vel starts to run. The small button runs, throws light or opens doors. On a computer: arrows, A and D or Q and P to walk, space, W or the up arrow to jump, the down arrow or S to crouch and enter, X or Shift to throw light.
  • Jump on snails, moles, crows, crabs, bees and beetles to beat them (armoured beetles need two stomps). Touching them from the side hurts Vel. Hit V boxes from below to pop out V coins, and green boxes to find acorns, which make Vel bigger and let her take one hit, and fireflies, which give her lights to throw. There are hidden boxes and secret doors: look out for odd sparkles.
  • Each level ends at a door, a lighthouse, a shelter or a gate, and the lanterns along the way mark where you come back if you lose a life. The last level of each world has a boss: the door only opens once it is beaten. You earn one star for reaching the end, one for collecting every V coin and one for finishing under par time. V coins give stars and points, never V directly.
  • Points: 50 per V coin, 100 to 400 per enemy stomped in a row, 500 per acorn, firefly or heart, 2000 per boss, 1000 for reaching the end, 1000 for all coins and 5 for every second left. The Adventure leaderboard counts the sum of your best score on each level. The level of the day is the same for everyone and only your first attempt scores.

Where this game comes from

Platform games were born in the arcades of the early 1980s: a character who runs, jumps from floor to floor and dodges enemies. Soon after came levels that scroll sideways as you move forward, which became the best-known form of the genre on the 8-bit consoles of the mid-1980s.

In the 1990s, 16-bit consoles brought backgrounds with several layers moving at different speeds, known as parallax scrolling, which gives the scenery depth. Vel’s Adventure follows that tradition with characters, levels and music made from scratch for Velmoxia, all drawn and played by the game itself.
