What is known
- Noise for sleep: a review of 38 studies found that the evidence that continuous noise improves sleep is of very low quality.Source: Riedy et al., Sleep Medicine Reviews, 2021.
- Pink noise: in a lab study with 11 people, short sounds played in time with the slow waves of sleep boosted those waves and next-day memory. A continuous sound, like the one on this page, does not do the same.Source: Ngo et al., Neuron, 2013.
- Binaural beats: a meta-analysis of 22 studies found small to moderate effects on memory, attention and anxiety, with large differences between studies. They only work with headphones.Source: Garcia-Argibay et al., Psychological Research, 2019.
- 432 Hz, 528 Hz and other frequencies: studies are few and small, and none shows that they treat illness.Source: PubMed search.
- Slow breathing: a review links breathing about 6 times a minute to more relaxation in small studies, and a meta-analysis of 12 trials found a small to moderate drop in stress.Source: Zaccaro et al., 2018 and Fincham et al., Scientific Reports, 2023.
- Volume: the WHO recommends background noise in the bedroom below 30 dB(A) for sleep. Keep the volume low.Source: WHO, Guidelines for Community Noise, 1999.
